The Chanel Rip Off!
I was just doing some net browsing today, having come back with a shopping spree from MAC with a friend.
|Are you getting your money's worth with Chanel?|
Nope, I didn't get anything. But my friend is getting married so she bought quite a few things from MAC. I was tempted too, but somehow today was one of my saner days and I just got Maybelline lip balm in color bloom - Peach as my first tube is over. (I know! I need to review so many things!) and an Max Factor mascara as my earlier one is due to expire soon.
Anyways, I was doing TPgiri online when I came across this video by a UK based Makeup Artist. I'm sorry I don't know what his real name is, I just know him as Goss.
So now it seems that Chanel is ripping off the Britishers, by selling much lesser quantities for the same price as when compared to US.
The price (after conversion) and colors are both same in US & UK, but in US their eyeshadow palettes have 6 gms total quantity (for 58$) & in UK just 1.2 gms total quanitity (for 37 Pounds).
It's the same for blush but the discrepancy is smaller (6gm vs 4gm).
I started to wonder after watching the video about what's happening in India. So I googled for a bit of product details and it seems....
.... that in India also they sell the 1.2 gm version for some 3000 odd bucks (same as US price of 58$) so essentially they are doing the same in India as UK. Our US counterparts are getting 5 times the quantity for the same price it seems.
In any case, I really don't use any Chanel so it doesn't matter to me. But for those of you who do, consider asking your US based relatives to get you some. It'll cost you the same but you will get more.
You can watch the video below:
UPDATE: So it seems Chanel did respond to Goss. Below is their conversation. I still think you should order their stuff from US.
E-MAIL FROM CHANEL
In response to your recent You Tube video about Chanel eye shadows, please find attached a statement from Chanel. We hope this will be helpful to you and please direct any questions to either myself or Penelope Cross in the Chanel UK press office.
Chanel would like to respond to questions raised on the differences noted between Quadra eye shadow sold in the US and in the UK: The difference in weight between these two products is due to different manufacturing techniques (baked shadow and powder shadow) and ingredients (pigments, binders). The density is also different in the baked shadow sold in the UK and many other markets which has a lighter texture compared to powder eye shadow sold in the US. This is why the weight of the two products is different. However, both products are similar in terms of quality and the length of time they last.
MY REPLY (This is Goss MUA, not me):
Thank you for taking the time and writing me. Believe me its much appreciated. I have read your e-mail thoroughly.
The problem that I have, and I think many other people have, is that it doesn't answer the question as to why the grams are so low. While I understand that the processing is different (and I'm still unsure why we have baked in one country and non-baked in another) what this amounts to is a product that contains 4.8grams of eyeshadow less (weight) and a sheerer application! So in order to achieve higher levels of pigmentation we would need to use more! You can see my issue!
While its probably something i don't think we will agree on i cannot thank you enough for e-mailing me. I really appreciate it.
Fingers crossed the US eyeshadows come to the UK soon :)
